Developmental Approach to Obstructive Sleep Apnea

At The Healing Art of Dentistry, Dr. Franziska Dutton and Dr. Daniel Cohen utilize the innovative Vivos System® to address sleep-disordered breathing issues in children. This groundbreaking approach helps to enhance airway patency, which can lead to improved sleep quality and overall health. It is:

  • Non-Invasive Treatment: A comfortable, holistic solution without the need for surgery.
  • Comprehensive Care: Addresses underlying causes of sleep-related breathing disorders.

Oral Myfunctional Disorders Have Been Associated With Various Disorders Including:

  • Sleep Disordered Breathing and Sleep Apnea
  • Cranio-mandibular Malalignment and Cranial Distortions
  • Malocclusions and altered dental development
  • Periodontal disease
  • Speech problems
  • GERD
  • Bruxism
  • Orthodontic relapse

The Treatment Is Divided Into 4 Phases:

  1. Pre-Treatment (elimination of noxious oral habits)
  2. Intensive Phase (weekly appointments for eight weeks) during which time the therapist and patient work on muscle activation, palatal tongue rest position, pressing the lips together at rest, chewing and swallowing food and liquids and coordinating and patterning orofacial muscles to attain proper function. This reinforces any habit elimination.
  3. Generalization Phase (appointments are once every two to three weeks for approximately two to four months). Exercises are tailored to maintain a new pattern of swallowing, integrate awareness into activities day and night regarding oral rest posture, and habits are observed.
  4. Habituation Phase (the therapist monitors patients with monthly evaluations and exercises until the treatment program is complete after approximately one year). Follow-up as needed.

Epigenetic Orthodontics: A treatment that uses a person’s natural genes to painlessly correct and straighten the jaws, teeth, soft tissues and functional spaces using biomimetic appliances.

Biomimetics (Biomimicry):  A science that studies natural models and then uses these designs and processes to solve human problems.
